Goals and Catching Up on Business Redux

On Tuesday, June 28th, 2011, I posted a list of my goals for the remainder of 2011, inspired by my buddy, Pam Asberry. She has her personal blog called Sometimes It's Cloudy, Sometimes It's Clear:
I wrote down my goals on some scrap paper and promptly put them in the drawer of the desk and forgot about them.
I do remember that the goals, in order to be more effective, need to be "I will..." statements and have a definite date attached to them. Simply by writing them down, they are more likely to be accomplished, right? They need to be doable, which means I need to get off my fat @ss and stop playing Jewel Quest III all afternoon, while watching bad TV.
So, here are the goals I put before you on June 28th for the remainder of 2011 and my progress (or not so much) in brackets afterward:
1. I will finish one large needlework project by 12-31-2011. I love stitching and have several that would only require a little more effort to finish. [Don’t know if that will happen. I have finished one small piece and started another for an end of February birthday gift for a friend. I’m about I’d say one-sixth through and it goes pretty quickly.]
2. I will be more active and watch my diet to lose at least 10 lbs. by my doctor's appointment the first week in September (let's say 9-1-2011). Really. It's not that hard, Julee. [Did not do it by then, but I did start. I was so sick in August, I started my radical diet and have lost over twenty pounds by the end of October. Not too shabby.]
3. I will get the boxes of cross-stitch magazines and craft stuff that I no longer have need of or want to the place that sells them on eBay for me by 9-1-2011. I've made several hundred dollars so far this year off of stuff that had been in boxes in the garage, not seeing the light of day for years. [Just got payment today (Nov. 3rd) for the last shipment ($65 toward the new Laptop Fund!) and I have three more boxes of things ready to go. I just need to get the magazine box upstairs (oh, honey….?), seal,  label them and get them to the post office. I also have two pretty clear plastic bowls ready of Christmas earrings priced for the booth I share with a friend.]
4. I will clean and organize the dining room, kitchen and living room so that we can host a Christmas party this year, say before 12-23-2011. The dining room has been a storage room for the past year. I will include re-upholstering the six chairs I spray painted black last year. [Don’t know if this is happening. See below.]
5. I will find full-time employment I enjoy by 10-1-2011. The TV station my husband works at is being sold, so this is an issue. [Close, but no cigar. It was November 2nd, I got notification they want my real persona to come work at the AT&T technical support call center, in their small business division. Nine (9) weeks of training, but think of all the cool gadgets I get to play with?! Yes, it’s full-time. The pay and benefits are decent and I’ll really get to help people. I am grateful. I just went to pee in a cup and talked to two people from the company that does the security checks, so that’s good. I start Nov. 28th.]
6. I will finish editing Seven Days by 7-31-2011, so it can go to my beta readers. [Didn’t happen. I’ve divided the book into two stories. Seven Days: Will and Elizabeth is essentially done, as is Seven Days: Rob and Mary, because I just used the alternate POV scenes and stuff I had in my notes anyway. Rescheduled to the end of January, with new employment.]
7. I will finish writing at least one other novel-length manuscript by 12-1-2011. Shouldn't be a problem, because I pretty much have Seven Months done, except for putting it in first person. [I’m splitting up Seven Months too and I have so many good notes, I’m very excited about the two stories. I’m saying end of March or maybe end of April.]
8. I will research and query at least three agents by 9-31-2011. [Not going to happen. See #9.]
9. I will research and make a decision about self-publishing by 10-31-2011. [Decision was made in August or September. Definitely self-publishing, but will choose a company that does print-on-demand too . Why should I give someone else all but 17%?]
10. I will get my writing notes re-organized and get at least five notebooks transcribed into the computer and saved on flash drives by 10-31-2011. [Didn’t happen. I have gone through almost all my notebooks and flagged the pages that involve Seven Days and Seven Months story lines. I’ve also gone through and scanned dozens of magazines for pictures and articles and saved on flash drives. Copies of said flash drives are in a safety deposit box at our credit union. I’m fascinated and excited from going through these notebooks and they are serving as inspiration for little “bridging scenes” in these four books. It will get done, just not as soon as I wanted. That Jewel Quest III demon keeps popping up.]
Not terrible. What do you think? I am following Jane Friedman’s advice (Google her, she’s awesome!) of keeping my daily goals limited to what I can write on a sticky note, so I don’t get overwhelmed. I need to get a new purse notebook out of my stash and transfer phone #s, addresses and such to it. With the new job, I’ll have access to lots of new technology and will be training to use it, so I figure that will be a great exercise. I may even be :::shudder::: tweeting soon.
How have you been doing on your goals? Have you had to re-set them, as I have? That’s okay. It’s all progress.

Happy Halloween Version of Sunday Sundries

Evil Pumpkin.

Cute cat!

For all of us geeks out there.

This wasn't scary--it made me laugh.

Wrong on so many levels.

Again, wrong on so many levels.
Have a super Halloween, everybody! Gotta get some other candy than Smarties early tomorrow....

Latest Batch of Tunes New and Old

You know the drill--you can click on the YouTube links if you like to hear what's been going through my head recently. Or not. Not in any particular order either.

“It’s your birthday…” Nuff said, well, plus 50 shirtless for most of the video.
Saw this one on a video program a few days ago and forgot how much I liked it.
Hadn’t heard this one in years, but I kind of liked it.
Not the cleaned up version, sorry.
Dixie Chicks “Wide Open Spaces” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dom7VlltBUc&ob=av2e
Another one I liked that I hadn’t heard in years.
                        “There’s Your Trouble” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9AD4pZJV2g&feature=fvst
Funny and smart, so it went on the list.
I couldn’t find this one, because I had the title wrong. One of my all-time favorites.
“Your Body Is a Wonderland” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5EnGwXV_Pg&ob=av2e
Another Sunday morning background music type of song.
Cleaned up version, featuring Jamie Foxx.
                        “Say You Will” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfrenkSar8Y
One I clicked on for a sample and I’m glad I did, because I like it. Not really a video, just a heart.
Lady Gaga “(Show Me Your) Teeth” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=linAbM35VMo
Saw the HBO concert and thought it was pretty amazing—a lot better than Madonna’s “Truth or Dare” because it concentrated on the concert without all the drama. Not really a video either.
                     “Just Dance” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Abk1jAONjw&ob=av2n
Only one with a commercial before it, but the video is pretty good.
                     “Edge of Glory” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeWBS0JBNzQ&ob=av2e
With the Late, Great Clarence Clemons.
Foster the People “Pumped Up Kicks” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDTZ7iX4vTQ&ob=av3e
Another one I discovered on a video channel that’s kind of fun.
Black Eyed Peas “Just Can’t Get Enough” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrTyD7rjBpw&ob=av2e
You can skip the commercial. This was filmed in Japan right before the earthquake.
Hip hop classic with Nate Dog.
Moved from my digital files onto my playlist:
I’m just being honest. You’re not supposed to shake those Polaroid pictures, actually.
Another ad you can skip. This is a live version, with a monologue before.
Katy Perry “I Kissed a Girl” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X024NEsDyC8
Not a video, but has the lyrics.
So, which ones did you click on and which ones do you have?

Sunday Sundries--From the Department of Odd and Useless Information

Okay, I can't be serious here, because I need to get my chuckles on before I do some serious work! I've been bad lately, not keeping up with my writing schedule and playing waaaay too much Jewel Quest III. So, please join me in agreeing that sometimes, this is what we need:
Are you with me? One of the things I've been doing is going through the tons of magazines I've gotten over the last year (literally!) and marking things of interest with sticky notes. Rather than writing notes into my notebook, then having to type them into the computer later (assuming I can read them), I've been scanning things in as jpeg files and dropping them in the appropriate folder in my computer. This one is in the Photos for blogs file:

I've enlarged it for you to enjoy also. I've found all sorts of things--models who look like my characters, rooms for my characters' houses, gardening tips, military stories for my characters who are veterans, child rearing tips and tons of great recipes.
So, despite not getting stuff down, I find I'm not sleeping as I should again. Bad Julee!!! But, others are sharing my problem and I found this on someone's Facebook page:
Doesn't that strike a little too close to home? Love it.
Being a serious fangirl, I tend to love cartoons and pictures involving "Star Trek" or "Star Wars." I'd seen this one before, but it makes me smile:

And of course the other one from the Epic Fail site:

DOH!!!
My other major love is cats and I have a huge file from the LOLCats site. This one made me laugh out loud because the subject looks like The Late Great Amazing Tail-less Wonder, my Sky Kitty:

Here's hoping we don't see whatever the memes saw! Please post or follow if you like and feel free to share on my Facebook page. Have a super week!

The Joys of a Good Bookstore and Reading

Hey, kids! Last weekend, Dear Hubby and I visited the fine city of Louisville, KY, to see some friends we know from when we were regularly attending and running science fiction conventions and we took the opportunity to go to Half-Priced Books and Books-A-Million. I dearly miss BAM--we had one in my hometown that closed a few years ago. When we're in the area it was, we always joke, "Hey, let's go to Books-A--awwww, crap!" We do that with the Borders, too, but it's not funny yet, since they closed early this year. BTW, it's a Halloween Store now. *sigh*

Anyway, knowing you love books like I do, I thought I'd share just a few of our finds.
First, a book on my Must Acquire List since it came out in hardcover last year:
I'm a little bit of an Anglophile and this true love story really fascinates me.
Next:

A re-issue I missed when it came out the first time. Love Lisa Kleypas's historicals, but don't dare put it on the To Be Read Soon pile, because it's teetering like a Jenga game. It unfortunately goes in the bin in the basement, until I can plow through them all.

Then to feed my cross-stitch addiction:
This looks so awesome on the inside and I'm sick enough that with a good light, these might eventually get stitched and framed. Into pain, I am.
Here are two on my To Be Re-read list:
I originally picked up The Left Hand of Darkness to pass on to my cousin's high school class, but the more I think about it, the more I know I need to re-read it sometime in the next year. I don't remember it like I should. THEN, I'll pass it on to her, because I have another copy somewhere in the 65+ boxes of books in the basement. The Club is somewhere in the depths of the basement also, but it will NOT be going to a high school class. It will be going on to a buddy of mine who is also an afficianado of "Lady Porn." You know who you are, Terry.

So, some of the folks at our SF gathering left a bunch of paperbacks and "pulp" science fiction magazines. I'm betting I have these out in the garage somewhere, but these two issues were pulled because they have Harlan Ellison stories in them.

Really, I am such a fangirl/geek, there are no words.

I did actually read this weekend and finished three books. Okay, I'd read the first two stories in the Christmas romance anthology a few weeks ago and read the first three chapters of the Harlequin on the author's website, but my husband was all peeved at me, because he's a slower reader. I really did marry my dad.

Thanks again to Karen Rose Smith for sending an autographed copy because I commented on a blog she wrote. Live for autographed books and that's the one thing about eBooks that gets on my nerves. Anyway, you can read my reviews of these two on Goodreads at:
The other finish was the first book I completed on my Kindle and it was also a "freebie" from commenting on a blog, so thanks for that:

And here's the link for my review on Goodreads:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11492912-never-a-mistress-no-longer-a-maid

Finally, here's the current issue of Real Simple magazine. I should just subscribe to the damn thing, because it seems like I buy most issues.
As I said, just a fraction, but hope you enjoyed sharing a look in my bookbags.

Sunday Sundries--a Mix of Things from My Blog Files

First off, ladies, you have to watch this PSA for breast self-examination. It is hilarious and if it makes you think to do your self-exam, it's served its purpose. Stay for the credits at the end.

This next one, I found on Facebook also today:

So true, so true.

The next one I got from one of my history geek friends:

Love that one too.

This last one made me laugh out loud--I used to work at a license branch and always pay attention to plates:
We Are Amused.
Have a super week and let me know if you find any more great ones!

Whoever You Were—Rest in Peace and Thank You

So, one of my local friends who knows of my obsession with all things counted cross-stitch, woke me up Saturday morning to tell me about a yard sale just a couple of blocks from her house. She was excited because she scored an office chair for $5. But she knew I would want to see the massive amount of craft supplies.
Not that I need any more @#$%, mind you. I have more patterns and supplies than I will ever be able to do in this lifetime or the next. In fact, I got rid of a bunch of stuff by shipping it to a needlework store where they sell such things on eBay. While I only get 60%, I don’t have to mess with it and I’ve done pretty well over this past year. Since Mr. Laptop died last month, I went through and got another two boxes out a few weeks ago and STILL have two boxes (one of XS magazines) to go out to them.
But, I went to worship The Cash-Giving Goddess and drove across town for a look-see. Oh my. She was right. They had about a half-dozen big boxes of all sorts of craft stuff and about that many bags. I went to my car to get my cloth Half-Price Books bags, because I knew, well, that the mystery woman would love for this to go home with someone who would appreciate her years of collecting stash.
I tried not to be greedy. There were two other women there going through stuff. I helped one by offering her first crack at some of the kits and patterns that seemed to be her style. Most all the stuff was more country, but there were a lot of Christmas leaflets. I recognized a few of the patterns that had been in my collection at one time. A lot of them had tags from the three cross-stitch specialty stores or the one craft department store that had closed. I probably saw her at Red Rooster or Stitchers Count, as much time as I spent there.
My bags and another were packed full. I got to go through them tonight and I wanted to share a small fraction of my S.E.X. (Stash Enhancement eXperience) with you. Even if you don’t like needlework, it’s fascinating to see what other people bought. I had an auction service deal with my parents’ house in 2003. I came up to one of the tables and a woman said, “This is someone’s life!”
I replied, “And yes, it was a very good one.” I hope it was the same for this lady.
There were dozens of pieces of fabric for stitching. I kept the even-weave and linen (a whole half-yard of a beautiful cream Irish linen!) and put the aida and other stuff in a box to be sold, including a baby’s blanket that was still in the packaging. This is a small sampling of what I kept.

My mystery friend had one of her pieces framed. It’s not my style, but I wanted to keep it as a remembrance of our shared passion.

I have a goal of someday sewing a Christmas tree skirt of hand towels and I added to my collection. The one she actually stitched (only one side, the other is partially finished) and the others are store bought.

I kept the dozens of partially used DMC embroidery floss skeins, but collected a gallon-sized bag full to ship off to sell. You guessed it, I already have all the colors. Kind of pretty though, don’t you think?

Here is a small fraction of the kits and ornament frames. There were a few finished pieces I sent on for sale too and some unfinished that I tossed.  It made me sad, but I have dozens of little projects of my own to finish.

I picked up this CD of Christmas music. Or so I thought. Look what was inside.

So, I went up to the bored and not-so-grieving family, plopped the bags down and said, “How about $20?” I think they were relieved they wouldn’t have to cart that stuff to Goodwill. My friend chided me when we got in the car that I probably could have given them a ten. I know, but it was worth it.
I got a blue and white teapot pincushion for her (still in the package) and I’ll take her out to dinner when I get the check from the service as a “finder’s fee.”
Somewhere, there’s a stitcher looking down at me with a smile. I enjoyed visiting with her for a while and I hope her soul is at rest knowing everything will go to new homes and people who want it. I’ll think of her whenever I use my new laptop and say a quick prayer of thanks.
